A Little About Me
Life of a Student Athlete
My name is Lucas Sutton. I was born and raised in the southern tier of New York. I currently attend the State University of New York at Geneseo. I have dual interests in both biology and economics, which is where my interest in introducing prawns to a reservoir stems from. I came to Geneseo for two reasons; to learn and to run for one of the best programs in the country. Being a member of the cross country and track and field programs at Geneseo holds a deep place in my heart. These programs are where I have developed as a scholar, using teammates as resources for learning, This is where I have developed as an adult, putting training responsibilities on my plate in order to help become the best possible runner and teammate that I can achieve. My academic and athletic goals have led me to come to Ghana where, over the course of June 2019, I will grow into a potential candidate for graduate school.

About My Work
Researching a Neglected Tropical Disease
Schistosomiasis is considered one of many neglected tropical diseases found around the world. Ghana is a specific nation that is affected by this parasitic infection. This disease can cause cognitive impairment in young children that effects them throughout the course of their life. My work with schistosomiasis started while on a study abroad trip studying global health. My group spent a week working in the field with the children and teachers in a small community that suffers from this parasitic infection. We also spent time in the laboratory preparing stool and urine sample, testing for schistosomiasis in the community. Since then, I've been working on finding ways other than mass drug administration to cut down on the prevalence of this disease. Currently, while I'm in Ghana, my goal is to find out if we can introduce a specific species in order to kill and eliminate a vector that transmits this disease.
